Antenna Measurements Now Possible at Multi-million Dollar Research Laboratory
CEDAR PARK, Texas, November 7, 2011 – ETS-Lindgren announced completion of a multi-purpose tapered antenna test chamber and measurement system at the Temasek Laboratories of the National University of Singapore (TL@NUS). TL@NUS is located in a new S$42 million building on the NUS campus dedicated to the state-of-the-art research in physical, environmental and mechanobiological sciences. ETS-Lindgren’s tapered chamber, a critical research tool at the new antenna laboratory of TL@NUS, was designed and installed for educational and academic research purposes. The multi-purpose chamber may be used for both far-field and spherical near-field antenna measurements, over an extended frequency range from 200 MHz to 18 GHz.
Unlike traditional tapered chambers that have a square base pyramidal tapered section, the TL@NUS tapered chamber is unique in that it has a conical section for its entire length. This chamber could not have been built without ETS-Lindgren’s capability to cut the anechoic absorber material into complex shapes. The full conical tapered chamber has no transitions from square to octagonal to conical as in traditional tapered chamber designs. The result is a chamber where the source positioning is minimized across the range, providing excellent performance for frequencies above 2 GHz.
“This project was certainly unique and challenging for ETS-Lindgren. The researchers wanted a high performance chamber within a small given space since real estate in the new building was a premium,” commented ETS-Lindgren’s Mark Mawdsley, Managing Director, Asia Operations. “Our engineers were able to meet both objectives with a chamber that was capable of conducting far-field and spherical near-field antenna measurements from 200 MHz to 18 GHz with overall nominal external chamber dimensions of just 16 m (52 ft) x 8 m (26 ft) x 4 m (13 ft). Plus, our exclusive absorber capabilities resulted in a truly unique tapered chamber design. It was very rewarding for us to provide a high performance, compact chamber to facilitate the high-level research objectives of the TL@NUS,” he added.
